This private, non-profit organization runs a museum to preserve the history of the Galena area and Jo Daviess County. The mansion which houses the museum was built in 1858 as a private residence. They offer selfguided museum tours, as well as guided walking tours of Galena, a cemetery walk, with costumed actors portraying historical figures, and historic home tours.

The Chicago Athenaeum Museum was established in 1988. Visitors of this facility are shown in detail the aspects of creating pieces, including the industrial pieces, graphic designs and urban planning. The center is open year-round for tours and hosts a variety performances, events and competitions.

Displays of early tools and various artifacts from the early mining days can be found at the Vinegar Hill Lead Mine in Galena. Guided tours of the lead mine are also available. The mine is open daily from June until Augusts and on weekends in May, September and October, from 9am until 5pm.
