Finding a Hotel or Motel in Galena, IL
Take a trip back in time without giving up any of those modern conveniences in Galena, Illinois, a small city with big charm. Known as “the town that time forgot,” Galena’s rich 19th-century history is evident throughout, with its classic Victorian architecture, old-style saloons and taverns and numerous historically-significant sites. In fact, Galena’s preserved heritage has helped make it the third most popular tourist destination in Illinois, after Chicago and Springfield.
While in Galena, be sure to visit its most popular attraction, the early home of former US President Ulysses S. Grant, as well as the adjacent Grant Park, which was created in his honor. Or explore the vibrant city streets and plentiful museums by taking an old-fashioned trolley ride throughout the town.

WHERE TO STAY
Town Center Accommodation
Galena’s historic charm is best experienced in the town center, particularly along Main Street, which is a mosaic of classic brick and stone buildings filled with charismatic restaurants and small mom-and-pop shops. Get the most out of Main Street by staying at the elegant and refined DeSoto House, which has the distinction of being Illinois’ oldest operating hotel. The DeSoto opened its doors in 1855 and has been welcoming notable guests like Abraham Lincoln, William Jennings Bryan and Ulysses S. Grant ever since. The hotel has a variety of rooms to choose from, including many fireplace suites, and offers a bright courtyard that makes an ideal venue for an event or wedding. The hotel also has an on-site restaurant.
There’s more to Galena than Main Street, however. Across the river lies the Irish Cottage Boutique Hotel, a luxurious and unique 77-room property that is adorned entirely in classic Celtic style. Situated on 20 acres of land, the hotel features fine amenities like a day spa, a restaurant, a gift shop, an indoor pool and a library named after Irish pets and playwright W.B. Yeats. And, in true Irish style, the hotel is also home to its own Irish pub where the Guinness flows for a price.
Hotels & Motels Outside Galena's City Limits
Although the town center is well worth exploring, Galena also offers a number of options outside the city limits. Nearby Chestnut Mountain Resort is both a ski center and hotel, providing 120 rooms as well as year-round activities like mini-golf, horseback riding, fishing and hiking. The Eagle Ridge Resort, situated 6 miles outside of Galena, has a 63-hole golf course and offers both hotel and villa-style accommodations.
Budget Accommodation
Looking for a place to stay that’s a little easier on the wallet? Galena also has its fair share of brand-name chain hotels and motels, most of which are situated along Highway 20 for convenience. Additionally, visitors might want to try the Grant Hills Motel, a comfortable and affordable option located not too far from downtown, or one of the many bed and breakfasts that Galena has to offer.
